Nootropic supplements, sometimes known as smart drugs are natural or synthetic substances that can be taken to improve mental performance in healthy people. They have gained popularity in today’s highly competitive society and are most often used to boost memory, focus, creativity, intelligence and motivation.

Nootropics are categorized into different types or classes of compounds. These include Racetams, Cholines, Natural Nootropics, Vitamin B derivatives, peptides, Ampakines and “Smart Drugs”.

Phenylpiracetam (also known as Phenotropil and Carphedon) is a central nervous system stimulant and nootropic agent belonging to the racetam family of drugs. Just like its parent molecule Piracetam, it enhances memory, cognitive function, and physical strength. However, it is 30 to 60 times more potent and energizing than Piracetam. It is for this reason that it has been banned from the Olympics for being a performance enhancer. While it’s most known for its ability to improve brain function and physical strength, Phenylpiracetam can also reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Most users consider Phenylpiracetam to be more potent than any other nootropic on the market. ADHD suffers compare its effects to those of Adderall. Most consider it a better, subtler alternartive.

Phenibut is useful in treating the following conditions;

  • Improves brain function. Numerous test on rats and human patients showed Phenylpiracetam improved cognitive function and memory after one month of treatment.
  • Improves memory. Phenylpiracetam increased the number of dopamine receptors in rats with memory loss. It also improved the memory test scores of 55 asthenia and 59 chronic fatigue syndrome patients.
  • May reduce anxiety and depression. Its calming effects may be a result of increasing GABA receptors. These are the same receptors benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety drugs) bind to exert their effects.
  • Boosts energy. A study of 1170 patients with chronic low blood flow in the brain and chronic fatigue syndrome found that taking Phenylpiracetam for a month reduced fatigue.
  • May enhance physical performance. It increased the speed and distance traveled by rats during an open field test.
  • May reduce weight gain. In obese rats, Phenylpiracetam significantly decreased body weight gain and fat mass increase. The drug also lowered blood sugar levels.
  • May improve immunity. Phenylpiracetam normalized the immune response in mice with overactive immune systems.

Phenylpiracetam is essentially a piracetam molecule with a phenyl group attached to it. This addition increases its bioavailability and ability to pass through the blood brain barrier compared to Piracetam.

Phenylpiracetam is believed to work by:

  • Increasing the number of serotonin, dopamine and GABA receptors in the brain, which helps improve mood and reduce anxiety.
  • Inhibiting dopamine transporters, which increases dopamine levels and improves mood and motivation.
  • Binding to and increasing the number of nicotinic acetylcholine and NMDA receptors in the brain, both of which are involved in learning and memory formation.
  • Increasing the levels of BDNF, a protein that helps protect the survival of brain cells, in the memory center of the brain (hippocampus).
  • Increasing brain alpha/beta waves, which aid in overall mental coordination, calmness, alertness, learning and focus.

Side effects may include:

  • Headaches: To reduce these headaches, it may help to take choline supplements.
  • Insomnia: the stimulating properties can keep users who take the drug late in the day from getting quality sleep.
  • Irritability:It can cause side effects similar to sensory overload, like irritability. Reducing the dosage may reduce these side effects.
  • Heightened aggressiveness: People with this type of predisposition should use caution when using this drug.

100 -200mg taken up to 3 times a day. After 3-5 hours of taking Phenylpiracetam, half of the drug remains in your bloodstream. User can develop a tolerance fairly quickly, so it should be used as a periodic enhancer, not as a daily supplement.
